I will probably get more than one entry from our little camping trip. After the kids were out of school the other day we took off on our first camping trip of the season. We went to Sand Ridge State Forest. I grew up in Illinois and had no idea that this little gem was here. When most people think of Illinois they think of farm land for as far as the eye can see. They picture corn fields or soy bean fields like this.

But did you know that Illinois has a forest?

And not only do we have a forest, but at Sand Ridge they have sand. According to the Illinois DNR “the area is a result of a prehistoric dry period when more desert-like condition existed.” And is home to the Prickly Pear Cactus. Yes I said Cactus! I saw them growing among the oaks, pines and other trees. The cactus is everywhere in this forest.

I really mean everywhere- watch your step.
Ok that is enough for today look for more tomorrow.
