We went to Matthiessen State Park this weekend. The trail we took wound around the creek bottom. They actually have stepping stones across the water, and you literally wind back and forth along the creek or dell. I was so cool! I want to go back, but I will need a pair of dry socks next time. We didn’t really plan to go there; we were too early to pick up my husband’s nephew, so we decided to stop there to spend the extra time we had. We didn’t have water or dry sockswith us . I can't wait to go back sometime when we have more time.
After our little adventure in Matthiessen, we picked up the nephew and took him on his first camping trip or at least that was the plan. The forecast had severe thunderstorms for 12 hours, so we decide to skip the first day of camping(although it didn’t storm). So Saturday we took the nephew camping and we explored some more of Evergreen Lake. It was a hit. We saw a lot of deer and took the kids to the beach/swimming hole. I saw a bunch of birds- the kids were most impressed with the Great Blue Herron. We saw a Turkey Vulture in perched in a tree. I had seen vultures soaring but never just sitting there- unless it was in a zoo. For me the big highlight of the birding was the Purple Martins. I know that for some people they are ordinary, but I live in town. So I don’t get to see them. Another big thrill was the Belted Kingfisher we saw one fly over at Matthiessn SP, but I really got to watch one at Evergreen Lake.
