Chewie is our long hair cat. Until Chewie, we had always had short hair cats. Even as kids Deer and I each had short hair pets. We knew when we adopted Chewie that he would need brushed daily. But, what we did not know was long hair pet sometimes need help keeping their hind-end clean too. Deer is the only person that Chewie will allow to brush him, and so Deer is also stuck with the chore of trimming the long fur on the backs of his legs and around … well you get the idea. If this task is not kept up with then we find that Chewie has an unpleasant odor or he may inadvertently carry unwanted items in his fur from the litter box. (EWWW!)
Lately Chewie has been neglecting his grooming. He stinks and he is dirty. Today we fixed him. We gave him a bath! Chewie is a 16 lbs cat. I thought he would fight, struggle, scratch, scream, and cry. I had no doubt that I would be covered with wounds and want to take the stinking wet creature to the pound. Cats hate baths, but there was no way around it- he stunk like a skunk. I was hoping that this torture will encourage him to take his grooming more seriously, but that is not what happened.
He did cry and try to get away, but he did not once scratch. Once he was half wet he stop trying to get away he just looked so pathetic. His big eyes just keep looking up at me and pleaded- Why? Why are you doing this to me? I thought you loved me? What did I do? I felt so bad for him.
After the bath he let us towel dry him and we even used the blow dryer and combed out all his fur. Of course it took Fawn, Buck and Me to hold, dry and comb him. We praised him and feed him treats for being such a good boy. Now he smells like kitty treats because as soon as we were done he sat down in the sun and cleaned himself all over. But I think I prefer kitty treat scent over kitty litter scent any day of the week.
