Turtle Habitat

My newest obsession is a turtle. Actually it is not new. I wanted to get a turtle for about 5 years but Deer doesn’t like reptiles. 5 years ago Deer was still in the Army and a fish and a cat were all I thought we should try to drag around the world. The fish died about 3.5 years ago and I decided that if I was going to do all the maintenance. I would really rather have a turtle. More precisely I want a paludariums or a water terrarium. I want a habitat for my turtle with live plants and fish.
To have a turtle you need special water filters for the waste water and place to for the turtle to get warm and enough sunlight or sun-like artificial light to encourage healthy calcium absorption. Turtles need water to swim in and a dry place to bask in the sun. Now that we are not in an Army world this sort of habitat is feasible as they take a lot of time to start and to establish the plant life. This is not a cheap little hobby.
First, turtles can live 30 to 40 years and much longer if it were a box turtle. I think a painted turtle or a red eared slider turtle is what I would want. 30 to 40 years is a long commitment for a pet that needs live food and filtration. But it would be fun to build a terrarium with a variety of plants, guppies, a turtle and maybe a frog or two.
I have decided that I really wanted a turtle, but it is too expensive on our current budget for me to just go buy everything at once. So, I am going to do is what I tell my kids to do- “save”. I figure that it will take me a year to save enough to start get a tank, stand, filters, hood, lights, and a few plants before I get my turtle. That means I have a whole year to convince Deer that turtles are not evil reptiles that want to eat you.
