I don’t know where I get these ideas. I decided that I had enough with the white, flat, non-washable scum covered paint and was going to paint over winter break. Of course Christmas is draining on the budget and I ran out of money before I bothered with buying paint. I made it my mission to paint over spring break. I was going to paint the hallway, dining room and kitchen. HA! Plus I was going to put up a new light fixture in all three places too. HA! HA! HA!
So about a week before spring break I realized that was not only too ambitious for me but I didn’t have the budget for it either. My very nice neighbor and his brother came over and for a very reasonable fee put up the light in the dining room. I splurged on paint with 0VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and I spent my entire spring break painting. If painting was all that needed done it would be an easy task.
I am envious of those shows on HGTV that show painting as simple. They never really show the hours and hours it takes to unload the all the china, crystal, casserole pans, pie plates, Corning ware, Pyrex, glass, table clothes and napkins piled into my china cabinet in my dining room. They don’t show the 4 hours you have to wait between coats. They don’t ever show the 5 foot 1 inch woman hauling the ladder round and round the room so she can paint all the corners and edges all along where the ceiling and wall meet. I am so short I need a ladder for trim around the doors. They also leave out the2 hours I spent cleaning up huge spill on the carpet or the other hour I spent cleaning up the other spill all down the wall, tile, carpet and my poor husband. Both spills were from the top of the ladder…. Of course… for maximum spatter.
About halfway through this painting project it became clear I was not going to finish all the hall, dining room and kitchen; so I settle for the hall and dining and one wall in the kitchen. Then I went back to school on Monday. I still have to drag all that china, glass etc. out of the toy room in the basement (where we stacked it during painting) and put it all back. Oy!
